Quick answer

Recovery after childbirth takes at least six weeks for the uterus to return to its original size, and six to twelve months for energy, sleep and core strength to fully return. The three things that help most are adequate protein and iron in the diet, protected sleep even when broken, and light movement increased gradually. Any herbal supplement should be discussed with a doctor first, particularly for breastfeeding mothers.

Key facts

  • The uterus takes roughly six weeks to return to its original size.
  • Blood loss during delivery raises the risk of iron deficiency.
  • A breastfeeding mother's protein needs are higher than before pregnancy.
  • Light movement can begin after a doctor clears it at the six-week check.
  • Breastfeeding mothers should consult a doctor before taking any herbal supplement.

The first six weeks

The uterus contracts back to its original size over roughly six weeks. In the same period the body is replacing lost blood, healing tissue, and adjusting to a sharp hormonal shift.

Fatigue in this period is not a sign of weakness. It is the result of three physiological processes running at once while sleep is interrupted every two to three hours.

Iron and protein

Blood loss during delivery raises the risk of iron-deficiency anaemia, which causes fatigue that does not lift with rest. A simple blood test can check for it.

Accessible iron sources: red meat, liver, eggs, dark leafy greens and legumes. Vitamin C in the same meal significantly improves iron absorption from plant sources.

Protein is needed for tissue healing and milk production. A breastfeeding mother needs roughly 25 grams more protein a day than before pregnancy.

Protected sleep

The advice to "sleep when the baby sleeps" is often impractical, but the principle behind it is right: total sleep matters more than unbroken sleep.

What helps most is one continuous four-hour block every 24 hours, even if that means someone else handles one feed. That block lets the body complete full sleep cycles, which a 40-minute nap cannot deliver.

Graduated movement

After a doctor clears you at the six-week check, start with a ten-minute walk a day. Add five minutes each week.

Core work should start with diaphragmatic breathing, not sit-ups. Abdominal muscles separated during pregnancy need to knit back together before they can carry load.

When to see a doctor

Bleeding that increases after it had reduced, fever, chest pain, or persistent low mood beyond two weeks are not part of normal recovery. All warrant a check.

Postnatal depression affects roughly one in seven mothers and is treatable. It is not something to carry in silence.

Herbal supplements: what to ask first

Traditional women's herbs such as kacip fatimah and manjakani have long been used in local practice. That does not mean they suit everyone at every stage.

For a breastfeeding mother, active compounds can pass through milk. For a mother on medication, herbs can interact with it. Your doctor needs the full list of what you are taking to advise usefully — bring the bottle or a photo of the label to the appointment.

Frequently asked

The uterus returns to size in about six weeks, but energy, sleep and core strength usually take six to twelve months to fully return.

Speak to a doctor first. Active compounds in herbs can pass into breast milk, and some interact with medication.
